The club aims to provide a monthly
programme of talks, competitions and other activities, on
all aspects of gardens and gardening, covering the needs of
both the expert and the complete beginner. We also have
excursions to places of interest. Activities are held in an
informal and friendly atmosphere, and talks are followed by
the opportunity to exchange news and views over a cup of
tea. Visitors are welcome to attend the meetings
Annual Membership £7. Visitors £1.00.
Do come along!
The programme of events for 2009/10 is
posted
below
Our next
meeting on Thursday 2nd July in the Church Institute
(7pm for 7-30pm start)
will be a talk by Jim Buchanan on Plant
Propagation
and the competition is A Specimen Rose
Everyone knows Jim who runs Aled Plants in Henllan
and will be familiar with the wide range of plants he grows
and propagates himself. We should all learn some useful tips
from his talk.
A small group of us will be visiting Kevin Bailey's bonsai
garden in St. Asaph
on Saturday July 18th at 2.0pm - more information at the
meeting.

Previous Meetings
June
- Joanna Davidson who runs a nursery with a friend on
Anglesey, came to speak to us about cottage garden plants on
June 4th. The plants she brought were the basis of her talk,
telling us about their habit, how to grow them, and
requirements. Many of us bought plants from her afterwards.
The competition for the Most Unusual Flower was won
by Paula Mitchell
2nd - Sheila Marshall and 3rd - Sue Rumbold
The Photograph of A Summer Garden was won by
Eluned Jones
2nd - June Lawrenson and 3rd - Lynda Jones
The coffee morning and plant sale were a great success,
despite the inclement weather and almost £300 was raised for
the Garden Club funds.
Thank you to all who came and supported us and those who
gave plants, cakes, etc. to sell.
The Open Gardens were also very well attended with 281
visitors, raising almost £3,000 for nursing charities and
over £300 on teas and cakes!
May - We were delighted to welcome Kevin Bailey from
St. Asaph on 7th May to hear about his obsession with Bonsai
trees. His talk started with slides illustrating a bonsai
holiday in Japan with fellow enthusiasts a year or two ago.
Then he introduced us to the examples of trees he brought
with him, one of which was 80 years old - all of them
beautiful works of art.
We hope to pay a visit to Kevin's garden in the Summer to
see his collection of trees and plants.
Check out the
Vale of Clwyd Bonsai Society (old site being updated)
and also
Blog (for more current content) to find out more about
Bonsai.
The competition of a foliage pot plant was won by
Eluned Jones
2nd - Marguerite Andrews and 3rd - Barbara
Buchanan

April - We welcomed Terry Scheers to our meeting on
April 2nd. Terry used to be Head Gardener at Bodelwyddan
Castle until he moved to the Medicash Garden in Colwyn Bay,
which won several awards under his care. A further move
became necessary because the house and garden were for sale.
He now looks after a private garden of some 60 acres in the
village of Cotebrook in Cheshire. Needless to say, he has
several other gardeners working with him.
His talk, 'A Tale of Two Gardens' covered the Colwyn
Bay and Cotebrook Gardens. Unfortunately, due to some
disastrous electrical problems he was unble to show his
slides on the screen so we had to make do with struggling to
see them on his laptop!!
There were some lovely entries for the 'Vase of Spring
Flowers' competition and the winer was June Lawrenson
2nd - Lynda Jones and 3rd - Margaret Butterick

March - The A.G.M. was held on March 5th, and well
attended.
John Barratt and Peter Saunders - Chairman and
Treasurer respectively, relinquished their posts after their
allotted 2 yrs. We owe John & Peter a debt of gratitude for
their hard work and dedication to the club. A very big thank
you to them.
With fear and trepidation Sue Rumbold volunteered to
be Chairman and was duly elected. Paula Mitchell
valiantly offered to do the Treasurers job and Nia Lyon
agreed to take over as Secretary.
After the AGM finished Graham Pickles gave a talk
about new garden products on the market, including a Goji
berry bush that apparently produces edible berries and
claims to be a cure for all ills!! After showing us some
more interesting products Graham gave us all a maincrop
potato tuber to compete for the heaviest crop to be brought
to the Oct meeting.
The cup for the most points awarded for the monthly
competitions was won by June Lawrenson.
2nd - Gwyneth Wynne, 3rd - Wenna Roberts & Eluned
Jones.
The February competition was won by Gwyneth Wynne, 2nd -
June Lawrenson; 3rd - David (Bodfari).
The March competition was won by 3 jointly - June Lawrenson,
T.D. Jones and Sally (Bodfari).
