Vanessa and David Griffiths – Henllan Shop/Post Office

Why does someone uproot, and move over 100 miles, to a quiet hamlet in North Wales? Perhaps the name Griffiths had local connections? But no, that was not it, at least as far as David the incumbent postmaster knew. The deciding factor in coming to Henllan was a simple preference over another choice location in Yorkshire.

David and Vanessa took over the shop at the end of November 2004, having relocated from Smisby, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire; where they were both employed in their respective careers, prior to being made redundant. Having cleared the hurdles of moving, starting a new job and having a film crew follow them around, (see below) a crisp February day dawned when their world fell apart.

BT in its infinite wisdom cut off their phones and Broadband connection to the shop and post office. Someone somewhere flicked a switch and hadn’t got the authority to flick it back on again. Days ran into weeks and all started to fall apart.

Undaunted, they put a brave face on it and have successfully managed to regain much lost business and have now started to enhance their original clientele. Overall, things have proved better than expected.

The future seems to hold no bounds. Both David and Vanessa are quietly confident of things to come. They hope to begin soon with more local produce and have plans for a Tea Room. In association with this they plan a range of office facilities and in conjunction with the website, a Computer Café.

The mysterious film crew are part of a Channel 4 Documentary/Reality TV program where 30 couples are engaged in lifestyle changes. The presenter is Gaby Roslin who was in Henllan, on September 8th, for final recordings.  The program is due to air possibly in the spring.

David says that he can brag that he’s had Gaby Roslin in his bedroom. Now that could really kick back and bite!
